Social Media Day Davao 2012

What is the role of social media in your life? For some others, it's merely an avenue to spill out rants and daily musings about day-to-day life. But for me? It has paved a way for me to achieve something I never knew existed. Needless to say, it has given me an opportunity to make a living and build dreams.

Since the hype of Friendster and MySpace, I was already a slave for social networking. I remember saving my allowances in High School just so I can spend hours in the internet cafe. We didn't have PC at home back then, so you can just imagine! But despite the nonexistence of technological innovations in our home, that did not stop me from discovering the cyberworld, or better yet, the world of social media. There was something about these websites that tickled my interest and so I gave in. In 2006, I discovered blogspot, multiply, and wordpress. One year later, I landed a job as a web content writer. And what did the interviewer ask?

Interviewer: Ms. Tolentino, do you think Multiply is a social networking site or merely a website were you can organize a portfolio of your photos?

Me: Social networking site, sir. Because you get to interact with people, exchange conversions with them, add them as a contact to expand your, well, "network".

Interviewer: So, how much is your expected salary?

And the rest is history. Five years down and here I am working as a full-time SEO consultant. Thanks to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube, Flickr, Blogger, Wordpress, and what not, I get to earn for a living. So if you ask me what's the role of social media in my life? You already know the answer! =)

Whew, that was such a long intro. Anyway, last June 30, 2012, I attended Mashable's Social Media Day along with my fellow Davao Bloggers and other social media enthusiasts in the city, in recognition of the digital revolution throughout the years. It was the third time that the event was celebrated worldwide, but first time here in The Philippines. Click HERE to know more about social media day.
