Eden Nature Park Through The Lens

Eden Nature Park is Davao City's own little Baguio and Tagaytay. It's about an hour and a half drive from downtown and is located 3,000 feet above sea level. This mountain resort is home to man-made nature grounds meant to rebuild a lost environment. It's home to fresh air and cool breeze, fruits and greens, plus a whole lot of adventures such as Indiana Jones, Skyrider, Mountain Trails, Campsites, Playgrounds specifically made for Pinoy Games, and what not. They also have a Bird Walk and Butterfly Sanctuary, two of my favorite spots, if I may say.

I had the chance to visit the place two weeks ago with my colleagues. I wasn't really in the mood at that time though, because it was a Saturday; my supposedly rest and "me" day. But thank goodness I willed myself to join the team. Visiting Eden was the perfect getaway to distress and rejuvenate my mind, body, and soul. The resort was visually appetizing and leaving the place without taking snapshots is a mortal sin!

Ibong Adarna is real! And Prinsipe Juan is hiding somewhere. Can you see him? LOL!

These are just breadcrumbs from the real beauty of Eden Nature Park. If you're planning to visit Davao, do include this sanctuary in your list.

Eden Nature Park is located in Crossing Bayabas, Toril, Davao City.

Davao Life Is Here: People's Park

I remember when I was still in Grade School, my classmates and I would often go to PTA Grounds after class and eat green mangoes with spicy bagoong. Back then, it was just a plain ol' soccer field where people could practice and jog around the oval. Our school used to conduct foundation celebrations and intramurals there, too. I studied at SPED de La Salle (formerly SPED Rizal), by the way . Fast forward 10 years, a theme park grew out of that boring soccer field, and is now one of the most visited places in Davao City.

People's Park opened its gates to the public on December 15, 2007 and was predicted to become the famous landmark of Davao City in the future, although I think it already is famous now. The 4-hectare park was baptized through a "Name a Park" contest conducted by the city government, through which the winner, Romeo Sardon, bagged 50,000php as the grand prize. The park showcases tropical rain forest trees, interactive fountains, large sculptures of native tribes, ponds, waterfalls, a sunken garden, Durian dome, and an open plaza among others.  This theme park is located in the heart of Davao, along Palma Gil street.

Check out these amazing views! (Thanks Fra Diavalo Jamir for the photos)

If you're visiting Davao and you want to get your hands on the best Davao treats and souvenirs, head over to Pasalubong Center. Here you can find Davao made goodies such as indigenous accessories, key chains, bags, sarongs, and of course, the infamous Durian candy among others.

Pasalubong Center was established through the initiative of Mayor Sara Duterte and is supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and other tourism sectors and private organizations. The goal of this project is to create more opportunities for Davao-based SME (small-medium enterprise).

Davao Life Is Here: D'Bone Collector Museum Inc.

D'Bone Collector Musuem Inc. is the first musuem in Mindanao to showcase relics and preserved skeletons from various animal species from all over the world including Canada, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Philippines.

The museum is owned and managed by an American Bone Collector, Darrell D. Blatchley, who says that the musuem is the realization of his long-time childhood dream of collecting skeletal remains from various animals. D'Bone Collector was opened in public last January 2012 in the hopes of raising environmental awareness and wildlife education, not only to the citizens of Davao, but to each and every person living in this planet. The bones found inside the museum are from animals that died due to accidents, environmental toxins (sea garbage), irresponsible fishing, and what have you. This three-storey establishment houses bones from bears, whales, dolphins, deers, snakes, insects, and different fish species among others. Most were collected by Blatchley himself since he was 15, while some others were donated to him by concerned individuals and various organizations.

Below are some of the skeletal remains that you will find inside the museum.

Davao Life Is Here: The Davao Bloggers Tour

In partnership with the Davao City Tourism, 44 Davao Bloggers and photographers went on a daring adventure to capture "Davao: Life Is Here", the official slogan of the Davao City Tourism.

The group was divided into four teams namely: Toril Trailblazers, Calinan Thrill-Seekers, Downtown Explorers, and Uptown Adventurers. The objective of the tour is to put the different places around the city on the map through the power of social media. Thanks to  the pocket wi-fi provided by Smart Communications, the participants were able to live tweet and check-in through Foursquare.

I was chosen to be part of the Downtown Explorers. Our group was able to visit establishments within the heart of the city such as the:

- Davao City Hall
- San Pedro Cathedral
- Museo Dabawenyo
- D'Bone Collector Musuem Inc.
- People's Park
- Pasalubong Center
- Cinematheque Davao
- Lachi's Sans Rival Atbp.
- Zabadanni Middle Eastern Restaurant.

It was such an enjoyable albeit a little tiring experience. I'll take you through all these places in my future posts, so stay tuned! =)

Downtown Explorers! =)

Day 26: Journey to Surigao [Tinuy-an Falls]

Sorry, it took me a while to finish the part 2 of my Journey to Surigao trip. It's been a roller coaster ride at work, but thank goodness, I'm almost done with my report. Hence, accomplishing this blogpost. To read Part 1, click here:

Straight from Enchanted River, we headed to our next destination; Tinuy-an Falls. In my estimate, I think we traveled around 45 minutes before reaching the infamous falls seated in Bislig, Surigao.

Tinuy-an Falls is a waterfalls in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It is the main tourist attraction in Bislig, a city known as the Booming city on the bay.
The falls is approximately 55 metres (180 ft) high, touted as the Niagara Falls of the Philippines, Tinuy-an is a white water curtain that flows in three levels. It is one of the best waterfalls in the entire Philippines because of its majestic and unique natural formation. Its colorful picture was once appeared in the International Travel Magazine. (via Wikipedia)

With all honesty, I was left speechless as I stood right in front of this God-made wonder. You could just imagine the height from which the water descends. I felt like I was in paradise...a dreamy yet realistic paradise.

Day 26: Journey to Surigao [Enchanted River]

About a month ago (remember this?), my boyfriend bragged about a Surigao trip that him and his colleagues are planning come the end of April. He mentioned about them going to the hottest tourist destinations in Mindanao to date, which are Enchanted River and Tinuy-an falls. Later, he bargained with me and convinced me to join them. Of course, I wouldn't miss the chance, so I immediately said yes.

April 29, 2011 - After I got off from work at 2pm, my boyfriend, along with the entire group, picked me up from the office and we were all geared up to our road trip to Surigao, which is roughly about 5 to 6 hours away from Davao City. We were 3 hours into the trip when we decided to stopover at some place to feed our hungry tummies.

We ate at this place called Kainan  sa Hillsview, somewhere in Trento, Agusan del Sur.

Day 14: Semprela sa Isla

Last Saturday, my colleagues and I hit the shore for a well deserved break-slash-team building. We headed to Isla Reta, which is a beautiful white beach in Talicud Island (an island found at the back of samal, and not literally at the back of samal. Yeah, I know, confusing. Dang! Am I even making any sense?) Anyway, it doesn't matter where it's located, what mattered most was:

On the boat, going to the beach, with my gorgeous officemates

Day 8: Nature Lovin'

I went to experience nature last Saturday with my family. It was unexpected and with such short notice, I was able to prep myself up and be ready for another great adventure.

First stop was at Maxima Aquafun Resort. This was my third time already, so I'm not gonna elaborate further,( if you wanna peek to what kind of adventure to look forward to, read this), but let me just say that whenever I come back to this haven, I come to experience something new and it's good because I don't get tired of coming back to this place over and over again. The second time I was here, I was with my two best friends and that was the first time I tried the canopy walk. It was dead scary but I survived nonetheless.

(You don't want to have this kind of face)

Yesterday, it was my first time to ride the Banana boat. It was wow! The adrenaline rush and the excitement coupled with the anxiousness from thinking that you might fall any minute was just super ecstatic. And because sitting there for the whole 15-minute ride was boring, the guy who drove the jet ski and the boat intentionally made a sudden detour, causing us to fall in the middle of the ocean. I don't know how deep was the water where we landed, all I know is that, it was effin' deep. Kuya Mark (my Auntie's niece from Bagiuo) took some photos of us, but I haven't seen it yet, so I'm going to update this once I got hold of it.

(My sister cut me off from my favorite shot. Great, just great!)

(off we go!! weeee!!!)

I wasn't able to take the giant slide this time because I don't know, uhmmm., yeah I don't know why, haha! As usual I didn't take the diving board because I get such shaky legs. I did snorkeling again and still, the view was just breathtaking. In fact, I think it was even more beautiful this time. I saw some different fish specie that I didn't see the last time. I saw Nemo and Dory (which is really cute with its short flippery fins) and a very colorful fish that I want bring home with me (it's got some pink and blue and violet and green all over its body).

At around 4pm, we transfered to a nearby waterfalls within the vicinity called Hagimit Falls. Who would have known, that in the middle of an island embraced with white sand beaches, a natural waterfalls exist?

I was captivated and even bedazzled when I saw this God sculpted waterfalls right in front of me. It was a view to die for and I couldn't help but be amazed with the sound of the gushing water coming from everywhere. This is just one of the many falls in this facility. I took a dip and felt my body shivered; the water was very cold but so refreshing. It was the perfect buffer after getting all the heat from Maxima. I climbed up towards where the water was falling, laid down and felt the current run through my back; it was like having a relaxing massage, only it was better. Unfortunately, we only stayed there for an hour. I left my heart at Hagimit, so i'm definitely coming back to pick it up. For me, this is paradise.

I SURVIVED MAXIMA

I feared but I conquered.

My body ached but I found worth.

Now I want more and yes, I’m definitely having more.

I’ve heard stories from my friends about their own experience at Maxima and I felt the thrill as they gestured how they crossed their arms above their chest as they take the giant slide or how they stood up on that diving board and jumped with might despite their nervousness. Some of them mouthed about their canopy walk experience and how their bodies shake as they wrestle with the hanging bridge. They sounded like they really enjoyed it and told myself, why just hear from them when I could actually experience it myself? And so, when my choirmates decided to give it a try, I couldn’t say no.

Our Samal adventure started Friday night (April 30). A cargo truck (and the reason for that is a long story) drove us from the Davao City to Samal Island and headed to our first stop: Mahan Garden Resort. We spent the night with giggles and cheers celebrating April’s 18th birthday. Our wishes were bestowed upon her through the pink roses each of us handed to her and a cake given to her by her boyfriend. The night progressed with us chillin’ out on the sand, under the moonlight breeze with bottles of beer waiting to reach our tummies. We didn’t stay up late though because we all knew there’s a much bigger adventure waiting for us the next day.

(April and her boyfriend, Jonathan)

I greeted the Saturday morning (May 1) with a pocketful of sunshine. Woke up around 5 o’clock and took a snapshot of the sunrise by the beach. I’ve wanted to do that, but because I didn’t had the luxury to unwind at the beach anytime I want to, so I never had the chance. But that day, I just couldn’t miss the opportunity.

(Good morning sunshine!)

By 6 o’clock am, we were all wide awake. I knew everyone was excited to whatever adventure was waiting for us. After breakfast, we were off to our second stop: Maxima Aquafun Resort. The road going there was bumpy considering the cargo truck that was carrying  us, but we all didn’t care. After a good 20 minutes or so, our faces beamed as soon as we saw the huge blue sign board at the entrance carrying the name of our destination. Each of us paid 200php for the day tour. After our registration was set, we took a stroll down (which is a tiring one by the way) to the free tables and chairs and settled our belongings. Since it was still early, we didn’t waste any minute to splurge down the sea while it is not yet crowded.

(All set to take the plunge!!!)

Same as what the others did, I tacked my life vest on and fired up my very own Maxima adventure.

Diving Board

The diving board was the first activity that we all tried. Looking at it, I felt my body jerked out of nervousness because I knew for myself that I suck at swimming and I’m a certified heights phobic. So you could just imagine the fear enveloping my every living cell. The only consolation I had was, I had a life vest on and that I would never drown despite the 120 ft deep blue sea that you’ll land into. Each time I attempt to walk that narrow diving board leaves me shaking. I backed out on my first and second attempts because I was a coward chickenshit. But I realized, I was wasting the chance to finally conquer my fear and so, on my third attempt, I finally gathered up all my strength. Scared as I was, I slowly walked down the board. There was a point that I felt I couldn’t hold it anymore that I had to fold my knees down and sit while I was in the middle of the board. I wanted to go back but my friend blocked the way leaving me with no choice but to finally jump off. I stood up even if my limbs wouldn’t cooperate, faced the wide sea and whispered a prayer of guidance…after three deep breathes, I closed my eyes and jumped off the board. As soon as my body landed and floated back above the sea, I screamed.

YES!! I DID IT! I REALLY DID!

Surprisingly, it was fun and I wanted to try it again one more time but I wasn’t able to because there’s still a lot that I had to try.

(The guy jumping off is my choirmate Jay-r)

Giant Slide

I was more excited to take the giant slide. And while I was also nervous, I had more guts to try it compared to the diving board. The slide was 40 meters long and the edge (or the mouth, whatever you call it) was 5 ft away from the water surface on high tide and 12 ft on low tide. It was still high tide then, so I knew there’s still a massive body of water to catch me. It was my turn to take the ride. I sat down the starting point of the slide and was instructed by the operator to cross my arms around my chest to avoid any accidental position changes. I felt the excitement rose up to my head and yes, I was actually smiling. I wasn’t scared though, I was just nervous. As soon as I said I was ready, the operator pushed me down the slide and I glided all the way down. I was screaming the whole time and I bet you would too if you were in my place. It was a very quick ride and like what my boyfriend would say it, it’s like we were thrown like a bullet from a cannon’s mouth. My legs hurt as it touched the sea. It must be because of the pressure from the slide. Indeed it was a worthy ride. I did it twice and I couldn’t get enough.

(Me getting ready to glide)

(Off I go...weeee!!!)

Snorkeling

I had never done snorkeling before, but I so wanted to try it. I tell you, I am not a fan of discovery channel (I know, lame!), but I do watch anything that has to do with underwater adventures. I am always amazed with the wonders beneath the sea. Which is why, I was really very happy that finally, I could have my own chance of seeing this extraordinary beauty myself. The day tour fee that we paid comes with a fifteen-minute free snorkeling. I couldn’t hide the excitement but I was kind of frustrated because fifteen minutes is too short. But then again, better to have a quarter of an hour than nothing. Complete with snorkeling apparatus, I paved my way viewing the creatures underneath the sea. It was beautiful and definitely breathtaking. I saw different kinds of fishes but unfortunately I can’t name them (because I don’t know their names..haha!). I was hoping to find Nemo but I didn’t. I couldn’t get over my snorkeling experience and I wished it didn’t end.

(Hello, fishy fishy!!)

Canopy Walk

My boyfriend and I wanted to try the canopy walk but  we weren’t able to make it to the cut-off time. Cut-off was only until 5pm. It was already 4:30pm but the line was still long. Next time, I will definitely try!

(Some girl trying her luck on the Canopy walk)

Well, that ends my Maxima experience. It was even more fun and memorable because I got to spend it with my choirmates turned friends and of course with my boyfriend (which by the way was a day before our 43rd monthsary.... =D).

(3 years and 7 months...getting stronger than ever...♥♥♥)

I can say, this was one of the best life experiences I ever had and yes, I’m definitely going back.

See you soon Maxima!
